How to Construct a Sukkah in Celebration of Sukkot

A sukkah is an important component in celebrating Sukkot. A sukkah is a hut made of branches similar to the Israelites’ dwellings while wandering in the desert for 40 years. Although custom-made sukkah can now be purchased online, a lot of people still prefer making their own.

  1. The first thing you need to consider in building your own sukkah is to select a construction site. The sukkah should be constructed outdoor. You can build your sukkah in an apartment balcony if you don’t have a lawn as long as nothing, such as roof or a tree will be hanging above it.
  2. Construct a frame at least 27 inches by 27 inches. The walls of your sukkah can be made with any material as long as it is durable enough to survive the wind. For a sukkah to be kosher, it should have two complete walls and a small third wall.
  3. The roof must be built out of organic materials (branches, leaves, bamboo poles). Put this on top of your sukkah. Make sure to leave some space open so you can see the sky through the roof at night.
  4. Have fun and be creative in decorating your sukkah.  You can hang fruits, vegetables, flowers, colored papers or any Jewish artwork.
