Widow of Former Chief Rabbi Asks Jews to Pray for Pollard

Rabbanit Tzvia Eliyahu, widow of Israel’s former Chief Sephardic Rabbi HaRishon LeTzion, Rav Mordechai Eliyahu zts”l, put out a special request on Sunday and asked Jews around the world to say a prayer for Jonathan Pollard in the synagogues during the Rosh Hashanah holiday.

The rebbetzin mentioned the words of her late husband, who said during his life that “it is a mitzvah and a duty on all of Israel to help with all their heart and soul and to act out to free Jonathan Pollard who surrendered himself in order to save all of Israel.”

On Friday, 1,200 rabbis appealed to U.S. President Barack Obama to release Pollard. The request came during a conference call Obama held with rabbis and Jewish community leaders in advance of the Jewish New Year.

Pollard is currently completing his 27th year in prison for a crime that normally carries a maximum sentence of two to four years – passing classified information to an ally.
