NYPD milestone: 1st Jewish chaplain 100 years ago

The New York Police Department is marking an anniversary. It’s been 100 years since the appointment of its first Jewish chaplain.

In 1911, the department hired Rabbi Abraham Blum to serve the spiritual needs of officers. He served alongside two Catholics and two Protestants.

Since then, the largest police force in the nation has become increasingly diverse. Now, the chaplains’ unit includes Muslims, Christians and Jews.
