HaLaila HaZeh — A New Israeli Haggadah in Hebrew

| |

HaLaila HaZeh is a truly Israeli pluralist family haggadah. Based on the concept Noam Zion and David Dishon’s A Different Night: The Family Participation Haggadah (1997, sold over 125,000 copies), we created a parallel haggadah reflecting, Israeli culture. This is not a translation but a new creation.

In the Haggadah:
The full Traditional text in both Ashkenazi and Edot HaMizrach nusach, accompanied by ethnic customs and traditions.

Israeli Poets:
Yehuda Amichai, Avraham Shlonsky, Haim Guri

Israeli Writers:
Ephraim Kishon, David Grossman, Amos Oz, Ariel Hirschfeld

Israeli Illustrators & Photographers:
Michel Kichka, Dan Reisinger, Aliza Urbach, Zion Ozeri

Israeli Religious Writers:
Rav Yuval Sherlo, Rav Kook, Rav Mordechai Gafni, Rav David Hartman

Israeli Stories:
Operation Solomon (Ethiopian Aliya), Natan Sharansky, Seder night in Syrian Prison

Halaila Hazeh is a pluralist Haggadah reflecting the variety of Jews that sit at any Israeli family seder.

It is inclusive of all ethnic backgrounds on one hand but also opens people to the contemporary search for personal meaning and spirituality in new key. Its classic text reflects a loyalty to tradition and yet its many add-ons offer a bridge to those deeply alienated from rote religious formulae.

Rather than a text-bound commentary on the Haggadah for scholars or for beginners, it offers a rich menu of resources for creative readings and fun activities for adults and children, stimulating thematic discussions on Pesach themes and multiple artistic interpretations of topics such as the Four Children. Each classic text has been linked to value questions regarding tradition and rebellion, freedom and slavery, identity and national destiny as well as a particular sensitivity to the poor and the stranger (including the Israeli exploitation of foreign workers and in particular women).

This is a Haggadah to learn from, to celebrate and to grow with - both for adults, for teenagers and for children.
