A former New Square village clerk was sentenced this morning to 27 months in prison and was ordered to pay $11.6 million in restitution for his role in stealing tens of millions of dollars from federal assistance programs and then hiding outside of the country for more than a decade. Prior to the sentencing by U.S. District Court Judge Barbara Jones in Manhattan, Avrum David Friesel, 57, apologized for his actions, saying that he broke the law and hurt many people.
