The Via Dolorosa

Via Dolorosa is one of the most magnificent and popular holy sites in the city of Jerusalem, a Latin word for Way of Suffering or Way of Grief. It is a street within the Old City of Jerusalem known as the path where Jesus walked carrying his cross from the Lions Gate in the Muslim Quarter where he is tried and ends in the crucifixion place called Golgotha in the Christian Quarter, the  Church of the Holy Sepulchre where Jesus was condemned and buried.

It has a total of 14 stations along this path wherein nine of this events occurred in Via Dolorosa and five of it happened in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre that symbolize the stations of Jesus’ crucifixion and burial. The events that are mentioned in the holy gospel was orderly followed by the stations. Station 1 is where Jesus was condemned to death by the Pontius Pilate, to the last station where he was laid in the Holy Sepulchre.

Visitors of Via Dolorosa are welcome to join the prayer procession held every Friday afternoon, which goes along the Via Dolorosa, from the first station and ends in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
