Shavuos 2011

Shavuos commemorates the divine national revelation at Sinai and the receiving of the Torah by the Israelites from God in 1312 BCE.

We are told (Exodus 20:15) that accompanying the festivities of the day was a spectacular audio-visual display that included not only smoke and apparent shofar blasts (see last week’s post), but the verse attests to something else as well: “ v’chol …

Manischewitz Cook-Off National Finals 2011

Manischewitz Cook-Off National Finals 2011

The Fifth Annual Man-O-Manischewitz National Cook Off just finished, and, man, I’m still buzzing. There was some serious high-octane, high-pressure, high-quality cooking, and I don’t think I expected to see any of that. I mean, this is Manischewitz you’re talking about — the matzah and wine people.

But this wasn’t your bubbe’s Manischewitz. Not only was the competition a …

Little Leibby, of blessed memory

Rebbe Nachman warned us that the tests of emuna would be the most difficult right before Moshiach comes.

What could possibly be the rhyme or reason for the brutal and gruesome murder of a gentle little innocent and pure 9 year-old Chassidic boy with rosy white cheeks and silky black sidecurls? This is certainly beyond any realm of human compassion.

How To Pray Jewishly

I became Orthodox under the guidance of someone who advised me to run from it. Rabbi Dr. Barry Freundel, the rabbi of the Kesher Israel Congregation in Washington D.C. — whose name you might recognize from the 2000 presidential election, when he was constantly quoted as “Joe Lieberman’s rabbi” and asked deeply-thought questions like, “If a nuclear war breaks out on Shabbat, will …

The Nest Is Half-Empty

I’m feeling kind of mopey after dropping Yenta Boy off at camp yesterday. I know I shouldn’t be. After all, a three-and-half week reprieve from a pre-adolescent smartmouth who’s obsessed with his hair contains a multitude of positives: No bickering! Half the laundry! Only having to cook for the one child who eats everything! No one stealing the good hair gel I bought at the salon …
