The Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial organization will open a new exhibit Wednesday focused on the “Righteous of the Nations,” non-Jews who saved Jews’ lives during the Holocaust.
Diplomats and Holocaust survivors whose lives were saved by non-Jews will be among those at the opening ceremony.
Yad Vashem explained that the exhibit will emphasize five complex situations that were common themes of the rescue of Jews by non-Jews during the Holocaust. The first is “in cellars, pits and attics,” which tells the story of Jews who spend years hiding in crowded spaces, completely dependent on their rescuers.
The second, “parting once again,” focuses on Jewish children who were hidden as non-Jews. The third focuses on Jews saved by the Church, the fourth on rescuers who paid the ultimate price, and the fifth on the courage to defy Nazi rule.
Several movies have been created that share stories illustrating the five situations. Directors Shula Spiegel and Dana Eden noted the dangerous choices facing would-be rescuers, who put their own lives and their families’ lives on the line by protecting Jews.
